James Bond and Texas Holdem
In the cinematic history of poker, few instances ring so true to the moment as the Texas Holdem game in Casino Royale (2006). While there are a bevy of other great movies that feature significant poker scenes, Casino Royale strongly demonstrates that Texas Hold’em has finally come into its own in North America.
While the film version features a high stakes Texas Hold’em game, the book version did not. The pivotal game was switched over to a Texas Hold’em game when the producers realized that American audiences would instantly react to the game. In fact, most Americans by this point know the rules of Texas Hold’em and some basic strategy. By using Texas Hold’em instead of another version of poker, Casino Royale shows that Texas Hold’em has become the standard for sophisticated poker play for the American public.
During the game, James Bond makes a few major blunders that can serve as learning tools for other poker players. For example, he shows very strong emotions when he is blocked from receiving more funds. poker players need to control their emotions whenever they are near the table, even if actual game is not being played. An altercation directly before or after the game can influence the mental state of the player and make them play badly.
