Don’t Curb Internet Speed to Tackle Piracy, Urges Carphone Warehouse CEO

After the release of Carphone Warehouse’s before tax profit figures, which have risen by £4m over last year to hit £133m, CEO Charles Dunstone has spoken out against the plans of the government to control the internet speed of downloaders caught illegally sharing copyrighted material.

The measures are expected to be published in the final Digital Britain report, and speaking to The Guardian, Dunstone said politicians were ‘nave’ to think that such methods would work to contain the problem of copyright infringement, as the trend is so widespread that it cannot possibly be curbed through such government action.

Dunstone remarked that users could always find a way to circumvent the system by concealing their data traffic or hitting upon another way to share content. The only action that should be taken is to make original content readily accessible at lower prices. He explained that peer-to-peer sharing is not the sole cause of online piracy and that there are a number of ways to share material online.

Remarking that the situation was similar to the story line of the cartoon series ‘Tom and Jerry’, Dunstone said that similar to Tom who is always unsuccessful in catching Jerry, implementing speed-limits and terminating connections would not be able to control piracy. He urged politicians not to pass legislation which would look ’stupid’. Keep up-to-date with the latest developments, refer to Broadband Genie, they also offer really good broadband advice.
